The Meade LX70 German Equatorial Mount is lightweight yet sturdy, with a weight capacity of approximately 20 pounds. Made of metal and anodized white, the Meade LX70 looks great whether its set up at a star party, in your backyard, or in the den. While the mount weights a total of just over 30 pounds, the components, which consist of the tripod (12 pounds), the mount (9 pounds) and the counterweight (11.4 pounds), are quick and easy to set up for most users.
An equatorial mount is especially made for astronomy. Features like setting circles allow you to find objects with the help of a star map, and latitude adjustments help match the mount to your location on the earth for more precise tracking.
Before you use the mount for the first time, simply set the latitude of your location. This will tilt the mount back so that it will be able to track objects as they move across the sky. The Meade LX70 equatorial mount can be manually operated by turning the precision slow motion control knobs to track or center an object, or by loosening the locks on either the right ascension or the declination axes, positioning the mount, and locking them again. When you adjust the mount in right ascension by either method, it moves in an arc to the left or right to compensate for the rotation of the earth. Moving the mount in declination makes slight up or down movements to follow objects as they rise, hit their zenith, and set. An optional dual-axis motor drive is available that will make these movements for you with the push of a button.
The sturdy metal tripod included with the Meade LX70 can be adjusted so that the tripod will stand anywhere from 33” to 46” tall. When you add the height of the mount, plus your chosen optical tube assembly to the mix, this height range should accommodate most users. A metal tripod leg spreader bar, which locks into place against each of the three tripod legs to provide extra stability, doubles as an accessory tray.
The Meade LX70 Equatorial Mount comes with a metal counterweight shaft and one 11.4 lb. counterweight, finished in white to match the mount. A metal counterweight knob threads into the side of the counterweight to hold it firmly in position on the shaft. A Vixen-style dovetail plate is included with the LX70 mount package to mount your choice of OTA in place, with or without optional rings.
