  • Description

The Meade R5 LX70 Telescope is a classic way to enter into the exciting hobby of astronomy!  The beautiful blue and white 5 inch refractor has enough light-gathering power to show details on solar system objects, such as the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter and Venus, as well as display deep-sky objects, like galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters in all their glory.  The timeless refractor telescope assembly is attached to the matching LX70 German equatorial mount via a pair of cradle rings mounted on a Vixen dovetail bar.  When set to the user's latitude, an equatorial mount will follow the movement of the stars across the sky by simply turning the precision slow-motion controls.  Add an optional dual-axis drive to your telescope and motors will do the work for you!

4.7 inch f/8.3 refractor tube assembly

Achromatic refractors have been around for hundreds of years and are a favorite of amateur astronomers everywhere.  The classically styled, long telescope tube gathers light with its large 4.7 inch (120mm) lens, and sends the resulting image down the flat-black painted optical tube, where it is displayed in the user's choice of eyepiece.  Refractors are famous for their inky-black background skies and their image contrast.  The included 2" rack and pinion focuser allows you to easily focus the image to your eye, and with the 2" to 1.25" adapter, will accept both 1.25" and 2" eyepieces and other astronomy accessories.

Sturdy equatorial mount offers an outstanding platform for visual or photographic use

The Meade LX70 Equatorial Mount has a weight capacity of 20 pounds.  Since the 5 inch refractor weighs just 11 pounds, this gives you plenty of room for accessories with weight to spare.  Many amateur astronomers will buy a second optical tube assembly at some point for the ultimate in flexibility.  Because the LX70 mount accepts a Vixen-style dovetail for mounting OTA's, it is easy to swap, say, an 8 inch Newtonian for the 5 inch refractor for times when you want to delve deeper into the Universe.

With brass worm-gear drives, you can ensure smooth tracking performance. Large slow-motion control knobs allow you to easily track the stars on those frigid nights where wearing gloves is a necessity. Precision push-pull adjustments in both azimuth and elevation make aligning on the celestial pole simple. The elevations built-in micrometer scale will help you dial in your site latitude quickly every time.

Stainless steel tripod holds everything steady

All Meade LX70 telescopes come with a beefy stainless steel tripod.  A threaded bolt connects the LX70 mount to the top of the tripod, and a spreader bar fits into position against each of the tripod legs to help with vibration dampening.  The spreader bar has a few cut-outs so that you can store your extra eyepieces nearby.

Ready to use right out of the box

The Meade R5 LX70 telescope comes with accessories that will get you up and running right away!  Included are a 2 inch star diagonal and 2 inch to 1.25 inch adapter, a 9mm and 26mm 1.25 inch eyepiece, and a 6x30 finderscope.  An 11.4 pound counterweight, painted white to match your mount and OTA, is also part of the package.  It will be sufficient for counterbalancing your telescope with the included accessories.  If you add more weight, extra counterweights are available.
