  • Description

Go big!  The Meade R8 LX70 Newtonian Telescope gives you tons of aperture in a fast f/5 reflector design for bright, wide field views of the cosmos!  The beautiful blue and white 8" reflector has enough light-gathering power to show details on solar system objects, such as the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter and Venus, as well as dig deep into a universe full of galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters.  The Newtonian reflector telescope assembly is attached to the matching LX70 German equatorial mount via a pair of cradle rings mounted on a Vixen dovetail bar.  When set to the user's latitude, an equatorial mount will follow the movement of the stars across the sky by simply turning the precision slow-motion controls.  Add an optional dual-axis drive to your telescope and motors will do the work for you!

This LX70 may be all the telescope you'll ever need

Isaac Newton invented a much smaller reflector telescope to study the heavens.  He would no doubt be ecstatic to have a full 8 inches of aperture to work with!  See the spiral structure of galaxies millions of light years away, attempt to count the stars in the great Hercules star cluster, M13, or delight in the anatomy of an awe-inspiring nebula.  Zero in on objects with the help of an 8x50 optical finderscope.  The included 2" rack and pinion focuser allows you to easily focus images, and with the 2 inch to 1.25 inch adapter, you can use both 1.25" and 2" eyepieces and other astronomy accessories with your telescope.

Sturdy equatorial mount offers an outstanding platform for visual or photographic use

The Meade LX70 Equatorial Mount has a weight capacity of 20 pounds, which is just about right for this large 8" Newtonian OTA.  Many amateur astronomers will buy a second optical tube assembly at some point for the ultimate in flexibility.  Because the LX70 mount accepts a Vixen-style dovetail for mounting OTA's, it is easy to swap, say, your 8 inch Newtonian for a 5 inch refractor or 6" Maksutov-Cassegrain for times when you want a bit more portability or a narrower field of view.

With brass worm-gear drives, you can ensure smooth tracking performance. Large slow-motion control knobs allow you to easily track the stars on those frigid nights where wearing gloves is a necessity. Precision push-pull adjustments in both azimuth and elevation make aligning on the celestial pole simple. The elevations built-in micrometer scale will help you dial in your site latitude quickly every time.

Stainless steel tripod holds everything steady

All Meade LX70 telescopes come with a beefy stainless steel tripod.  A threaded bolt connects the LX70 mount to the top of the tripod, and a spreader bar fits into position against each of the tripod legs to help with vibration dampening.  The spreader bar has a few cut-outs so that you can store your extra eyepieces nearby.

Ready to use right out of the box

The Meade R8 LX70 telescope comes with accessories that will get you up and running right away!  Included are a 2 inch to 1.25 inch adapter so your 2" focuser can also accept standard 1.25 inch eyepieces, a 9mm and 26mm 1.25 inch eyepiece, and a full-sized 8x50 optical finderscope.  Two 11.4 pound counterweights, painted white to match your mount and OTA, are also part of the package.
