The ZWO ASI128MC Pro includes the full frame Sony IMX128 imaging sensor. The IMX128 is a great choice for advanced astrophotographers due to its low 2.5e read noise, high dynamic range and a peak QE of 53%. The CMOS color sensor has a diagonal size of 43.3mm with a 6032 x 4032 pixel array and a pixel size of 5.97µm. Other specs include a full well capacity of 76ke, 14-bit ADC, support for BIN2, 3 & 4, and the ability to take a maximum of 7 frames per second at full resolution.
The ZWO ASI128MC Pro Cooled Color Camera has a design similar to that of other ASI Cooled cameras but also includes a 256MB DDR3 memory buffer. The memory buffer, which helps control amp-glow and stabilize data transfer, is what separates the ASI Cooled line from the ASI Pro line.
Regulated Two Stage TEC Cooling
The ASI128MC Pro camera allows the sensor to be cooled to 35C degrees below ambient. Below are the extra features that can be found on the camera body, specifically related to the cooling feature:
- Just below the USB hub (dual 2.0 Out and 3.0 In), you'll find a 2.1 mm center positive input for a cooler power supply (not included). ZWO recommends 12VDC at 3A max
- A huge heat sink, which is nearly 2/3 the size of the camera, is located on the side of the body
- The camera also sports a MagLev fan, which utilizes the attraction of the magnetic levitation force for low acoustic noise, high-temperature endurance, and long life.
To avoid any dew-related problems when imaging on nights of high humidity, the anti-dew heater can be used to warm up the sensor's protective window. Heat power is approximately 6 watts and can be switched off via software in order to conserve power.
Built-In Tilt Adapter
The ASI128MC Pro has a unique tilt adapter built into the camera body. There are push-pull screws on the telescope side of the camera that allows an adjustment of up to 3mm.
USB 3.0 Port and USB 2.0 Hub
The USB 3.0 port provides 5 GB of bandwidth to allow the ASI128MC to run at 7 frames per second in normal mode at 14-bits or at high-speed mode (10-bit) you can achieve 10 fps. Since the ASI128MC camera has a full frame sensor, power consumption (650mA @ 5V) is substantially higher than other cameras. That said, the USB 3.0 port can supply 1000mA current to let the ASI128MC run without the need for an external power supply. Keep in mind, though, that you will need to use an external 12V power supply if you connect the camera to the USB 2.0 host since it can only supply 500mA current. As the engraving on the power supply port suggests, you should use a 12V DC Adapter at 3A or greater for the cooler, and ZWO recommends a battery from 9V to 15V as your power source.
The USB 2.0 Hub provides connection with a variety of accessories, such as a filter wheel, guide camera, or electronic focuser, so your cable can be better managed. Two short 0.5 m USB 2.0 cables are included with the ASI094MC Pro Camera. The power source for USB 2.0 is provided via an external connection.
