There has never been a telescope design that has transformed the hobby comparable to the Dobsonian. Before John Dobson introduced the Dobsonian, the plurality of amateur telescopes was only just powerful enough to see the polar caps of Mars or the rings of Saturn. They were made up of small optical tubes and primitive mechanics. Only the wealthy could afford Schmidt-Cassegrains and other large telescopes. This ingenious blend of simple, efficient mechanics with the greatest possible opening entitles the Dobsonian to a special place in the telescope world. No telescope offers as much light gathering capability at such a reasonable cost as a Dobsonian.

 

Explore Scientific has now created the ultimate universal Dobsonian. This new design can be transformed into a Newtonian telescope. Simply unscrew the bearings from the tube and set the scope on an EQ mount using the Vixen-style dovetail plate that comes with this package and you'll be ready to take pictures.

 

The rigid stiffness of the included 2.5" HEX focuser with helical gearing and 10:1 reduction renders easy to focus while enabling the use of 1.25" as well as 2" eyepieces. By including this focuser in the 8" FirstLight Dobsonian package, Explore Scientific has significantly elevated telescopes at this price point.

 

Since the 8" FirstLight Dobsonian's rocker box has been assembled using metal quick connectors, it only needs a few tools to be dismantled into a convenient collection of flat boards for easy transport. The 8" FirstLight represents the ideal observing powerhouse. Even for inexperienced observers, details in planets and deep sky objects will be much clearer. Bright star clusters are resolved to their core while viewing the Moon's terminator line can be a memorable experience.
