  • Description

The Tele Vue Nagler Planetary Zoom Eyepiece comes in two flavors:  a 2mm-4mm zoom and a 3mm-6mm zoom.  Either is the perfect eyepiece for viewing celestial objects under high magnification with a fast refractor or Newtonian.  That cannot be said of all zoom eyepieces, but is often the case, Tele Vue provides a solution that is the exception to the rule.  Their superb optics and multi-coatings provide sharp, high contrast views, and they hold their focus, field of view, and eye relief throughout the zoom range.

Take advantage of stellar seeing conditions

It isn't every night that atmospheric conditions will allow high-power viewing, but anyone can tell you that when those perfect evenings happen, being able to get ultra-close is breathtaking.  To study Saturn's ring structure up close or get every last detail on the surface of Jupiter may only happen a handful of evenings a year.  For tweaking out the last bit of power that the atmosphere will permit on your fast telescope, the Tele Vue Nagler Zoom eyepieces are the best tools you can have.

Recommended for scopes of 800mm focal lengths or less

As we mentioned earlier, Tele Vue Nagler Zoom eyepieces are best used in shorter focal length telescopes.  For example in a relatively standard 80mm aperture, 480mm f/6 refractor telescope, the 3mm-6mm Zoom would output 80x to 160x, and the 2mm-4mm Zoom would provide magnifications from 120x to 240x.   Either one of these choices would be fantastic for lunar and planetary observations.

The specifications on both Nagler Zoom's are very similar.  Both have a 50 degree apparent field of view, eye relief of 10mm, which is reasonable for a very high powered zoom eyepiece, and a weight of just over 5 ounces.  Tele Vue designed these eyepieces to have five elements in three groups, with a negative lens group ahead of the focal plane.  By independently moving the upper and lower lens groups, the field of view, eye relief, and focus remain constant throughout the zoom range.  Simply rotate the upper barrel to zoom to the magnification that works best with the seeing conditions.  Click stops are built in so you'll know where you are without looking.
