The Meade 8mm - 24mm Zoom Eyepiece is a very popular choice for amateur astronomers who want the convenience of a quality eyepiece that will cover a wide range of magnifications quickly. No more constantly changing eyepieces when you want a closer look; just twist the barrel of this easy-to-use zoom eyepiece until you reach a magnification that is just right.
Know which focal length you are using at a glance
Meade has made it easy to know exactly which focal length you used for Mars, or the Moon, or the Orion Nebula. The black anodized barrel is marked in one millimeter increments, from 8mm to 24mm. If you want to know your magnification, just take a look at where the marker and focal length line up, and then do your calculations by dividing the marked eyepiece focal length into your telescope’s focal length.
Fits a wide selection of 1.25” focusers and diagonals
The Meade Series 4000 8-24 Zoom Eyepiece has a 1.25” chrome barrel, and will work with most any telescope. If you have a 2” focuser, you probably already have a 2” to 1.25” adapter, and that set-up would work just fine. The barrel is threaded to accept standard 1.25” planetary and Moon filters. Picture how nice it would be to gaze at the Moon with a zoom eyepiece fitted with a Moon filter! You would be able to zoom in and zoom out in glare-free comfort without changing eyepieces and re-installing the filter on each one.
Multi-coated optics provide good contrast and light transmission
A zoom eyepiece is a fairly complicated optical instrument. The Meade 8mm - 24 mm Zoom sports seven elements, and they are all coated with multiple layers of anti-reflection coatings to minimize internal reflections and provide the highest possible light transmission and image contrast. A rubber eyecup places your eye at just the right location, and can fold flat for eyeglass wearers.
Available for shipment to the USA and Canada only.

Q1: I have a Meade telescope (the etx90?) and though some images seem magnified a bit, it is no better than a pair of binoculars - is it the eye-piece?
A: The Meade ETX-90 telescope ships with a 26mm eyepiece that will produce about 48X magnification with the telescope's 1,250mm focal length. That's not much more than a good binocular can produce. An eyepiece of a shorter focal length will increase the magnification of the scope. For example a Meade 4000-Series 6.4mm Super Plossl ocular will produce about 195X, which is about the maximum you can expect to use consistently with your scope. Here's the URL for the eyepiece; just paste it into your browser's address window: http://telescopes.com/products/meade-super-plossl-6-4mm-eyepiece-1-25-inch-6356.html.
Q2: Is this eyepiece parfocal, i.e. can you zoom without re-focusing, or do you constantly have to adjust the focus as you zoom?
A: It is not a parfocal eyepiece you will need to adjust the focus as you change your magnification.
Q3: The Televue 8mm-24mm zoom stops at 8mm, 12mm, 16mm, and 24mm. Does this stop at the same places, or does it stop at every degree (as indicated by the hash marks between the numbers)?
A: This eyepiece can be used at any focal length between 8 and 24. It will turn to any degree between 8 and 24.
Q4: What is the difference in quality between using this zoom eyepiece as compared to using individual eyepieces of the same focal length ? Should one buy a couple of individual eyepieces as opposed to buying this?
A: The advantage to this eyepiece is that it gives you a range of eyepieces all in one. Buying them individually will allow you to get the precise levels of magnification that you want where with this your option is just form 8mm through 24mm. So if the ranges of eyepieces that you were looking for were in the range of this eyepiece then the zoom is not a bad choice at all.
